What Fire Rating Does FR4 Have?

What Does The FR Rating Mean?
The letters FR indicate flame retardancy, while the number identifies a material grade rather than a measured level of fire resistance. Therefore, “FR4” does not mean that the sheet can withstand fire for four hours or remain undamaged during direct flame exposure.
An FR4 sheet fire rating describes how the material behaves under a defined laboratory test. It does not represent the fire performance of an entire cabinet, battery system, transformer, or electrical assembly. Finished-product performance also depends on component thickness, installation direction, nearby combustible materials, ventilation, heat intensity, and exposure duration.
How Is FR4 Evaluated Under UL 94?
UL 94 evaluates how a plastic or insulating material burns after exposure to a controlled ignition source. Vertical classifications commonly discussed for rigid materials include V-0, V-1, and V-2.
