Can FR4 Handle High Voltage?

FR4 can handle high voltage when its dielectric strength, thickness, and operating environment are properly matched. This glass epoxy laminate combines electrical insulation with mechanical strength, making it useful for switchgear, electrical barriers, and power distribution equipment. However, voltage resistance depends on more than material thickness. Surface conditions, electrode spacing, temperature, and insulation direction must also be considered.

How Much Voltage Can FR4 Withstand?

A high voltage FR4 sheet is manufactured by pressing epoxy-impregnated fiberglass layers under controlled heat and pressure. Its laminated structure provides electrical resistance while maintaining rigidity.

SENKEDA publishes the following electrical strength values for its FR4 material, measured perpendicular to the layers at approximately 90°C in oil:

Sheet ThicknessElectrical Strength
1 mm≥14.2 kV/mm
2 mm≥11.8 kV/mm
3 mm≥10.2 kV/mm

These are laboratory electrical strength values, not continuous operating voltage ratings. Actual equipment requires suitable safety margins and verification under its intended working conditions.

What Affects FR4 High Voltage Insulation?

1. Material Thickness

Greater thickness generally increases the available insulation path through the sheet. However, dielectric strength per millimeter does not remain constant as thickness increases.

2. Temperature and Humidity

Elevated temperatures and moisture can reduce insulation resistance. Equipment operating in humid or hot environments requires additional material and surface protection considerations.

3. Surface and Edge Conditions

Sharp edges, machining cracks, conductive dust, and contaminated surfaces can encourage electrical discharge. Smooth machining and adequate creepage distances help reduce these risks.

Where Is High Voltage FR4 Used?

FR4 is commonly considered for insulating barriers, busbar supports, terminal mounting plates, and electrical equipment partitions. Its rigidity helps maintain component spacing under mechanical loads.

During manufacturing, laminate uniformity, bonding quality, and machining accuracy deserve attention. A high voltage sheet manufacturer should verify material properties and inspect finished components for cracks, voids, or layer separation.

Is FR4 Suitable For Every High Voltage Application?

FR4 is suitable for many demanding electrical assemblies, but it is not automatically appropriate for every voltage class or exposure condition. Equipment involving severe electrical tracking, repeated arcing, or outdoor contamination may require additional protective design measures.

Engineers should evaluate dielectric test results alongside operating voltage, transient overvoltage, clearance, creepage, and equipment standards. A successful insulation design relies on the complete assembly rather than a single material specification.

FR4 offers a useful combination of electrical and mechanical performance when selected and processed correctly. Final suitability should be established through application-specific insulation coordination and testing.
